What EPDM thickness does a playground need?

The right EPDM thickness for a playground is set by the critical fall height of the play equipment: the taller the equipment a child can fall from, the thicker the cushioning layer needs to be. It is determined by assessing the equipment, not by applying a single one-size figure.

Why thickness is about fall height, not a fixed number

The most common question about playground surfacing is how thick it should be, and the honest answer is that it depends on the equipment. Wet-pour EPDM is a safety surface, and its job is to cushion a fall. The height a child could fall from, known as the critical fall height, determines how much cushioning is needed, and therefore how thick the surface must be.

This is why a good installer assesses the equipment before quoting a thickness. A low toddler frame needs far less cushioning than a tall climbing structure. Applying a single thickness across every playground either wastes money where it is not needed or, worse, under-protects where children can fall further. The thickness follows the equipment.

How EPDM is built up

Wet-pour rubber surfacing is built in two layers, poured and trowelled on site. Underneath is a base layer of black SBR rubber, which provides most of the cushioning and is set to the depth needed for the fall height. On top is the coloured EPDM wear layer, which gives the surface its colour, texture and durable finish.

When the fall height is greater, it is the black SBR base layer that gets thicker, while the coloured EPDM top layer stays broadly consistent. This is why two play areas with different equipment can look identical on the surface but have different total thicknesses. The protection is mostly in the layer you do not see.

Getting the fall height right

The critical fall height is a property of the play equipment, usually stated by its manufacturer, and it represents the highest point from which a child might fall. The surfacing then has to be capable of cushioning a fall from that height. This is the single most important safety input for a playground surface, which is why we start there.

When we assess a play area, we look at every piece of equipment and identify the governing fall height, then specify the surface to suit. Where equipment is being installed at the same time, we coordinate so the surface and the equipment match. Guessing here is not acceptable, because the consequences are about child safety.

Colours, patterns and design

One of the reasons EPDM is so popular for play areas is design freedom. Because the colour runs through the rubber granule, it stays vivid as the surface is used, and the wide palette allows pathways, hopscotch, numbers, roadways and themed graphics to be built directly into the surface. This turns a safety requirement into a genuinely engaging space.

Drainage, heat and the UAE

EPDM is porous and drains well, which matters in the UAE for the occasional heavy downpour and for routine cleaning. Beneath the rubber, a properly drained base ensures water clears quickly so the play area is usable soon after rain. This is part of building the surface as a system rather than just pouring rubber onto the ground.

The EPDM granules are colour-fast and UV-stable, so the surface resists fading in strong sun far better than cheaper alternatives. For very exposed areas, lighter colours and shade help keep the surface cooler and more comfortable for small children, which is worth planning for at the design stage.

Installation and maintenance

Wet-pour EPDM is laid in layers and needs suitable conditions and curing time before it can be used, so the programme allows for this. For schools and nurseries we plan the work around a holiday window where possible, so the surface is ready and safe when children return. The finished surface is seamless, non-slip and free of trip edges.

Maintenance is light: routine cleaning and clearing debris keeps it safe and looking good, and because it is poured on site, any damaged or worn patches can be cut out and re-poured to match rather than replacing the whole area. With correct installation and care, a play surface lasts many years.

EPDM compared with other play surfaces

EPDM is not the only playground surface, and it helps to know why it is so often chosen. Loose fill such as bark or rubber mulch is cheaper to install but shifts underfoot, needs constant topping up, can hide hazards and moves away from the point of impact, exactly where you need it. Rubber tiles are seamless-looking but have joints that can lift and trip over time. EPDM avoids both problems.

Because wet-pour EPDM is poured as a continuous surface bonded to its base, it has no loose material to displace and no tile joints to fail. It cushions consistently across the whole area, drains well, and cleans easily. It usually costs more than loose fill up front, but the safety consistency and the low maintenance often make it the better value over the life of a play area.
